New and Expectant Parents
Congratulations,
We want to be the first to welcome you to the Down syndrome community. If you have just received a Down syndrome diagnosis, we know you may be feeling a wide range of emotions right now. You may be feeling sad, confused, scared angry, and/or isolated. We want you to know it’s okay and more importantly, know you are not alone…
The Down Syndrome Association of Greater Toledo is here to help. We can connect you to other parents who have been in your shoes, who know exactly what you’re going through. We can also answer your questions and provide you with up-to-date resources and education. Please check out our New Parents Guide for your next steps and when you’re ready, we’d love to meet you.
Welcome to DSAGT
We know that receiving a new diagnosis can be overwhelming. At DSAGT we’re here to welcome you with open arms and provide you with a community of other families who know exactly what you’re going through. We want to celebrate your new baby and provide you with a basket of gifts. Are you a new parent in need of a baby basket?
Programs
New Parent Breakfast
DSAGT’s Annual New Parent Breakfast is a warm and welcoming gathering designed especially for families who are new to the Down syndrome community. This relaxed event offers an opportunity to learn more about DSAGT’s programs and resources while connecting with other parents who are on a similar journey. It’s a chance to ask questions, build relationships, and feel supported—because no one should have to navigate this path alone.
First Steps Baby & Toddler Group
Join parents of other babies and toddlers with Down syndrome at our monthly play group and educational sessions. Each month will focus on a relevant topic to the growth and development of your baby and will feature a guest speaker with an expertise in that area. Some discussion topics include speech, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, sign language and more. All are welcome to join, please see our calendar for upcoming events.
Parent Mentorship Program
DSAGT can help connect new and expectant parents of babies with Down syndrome to trained parent mentors, who have been through similar experiences with raising a child with Down syndrome. New and expecting parents will receive support and guidance from their mentors during the first year following birth. Mentors can help answer questions, share helpful tips they’ve learned over the years and share up-to-date resources with new and expecting parents. If you’re interested in being connected to a parent mentor please email us at information@dsagt.org.
